Microbial solutions for agriculture and horticulture

A root-zone application calls for different choices from a product for substrate cultivation or delivery through irrigation. The crop, growing system and timing of use set the starting point. We assess suitable microorganisms and product formats with the grower’s day-to-day work in mind.

Applications

From growing environment to application

A product line for agriculture and horticulture rarely serves a single crop or growing method. The growing environment, the cultivation system and the way of application together determine which microbial product route may be suitable.

Growing environment

  • Tractor with seed drill on a field in open-field cultivation

    Open-field cultivation

In open-field cultivation, factors such as crop, soil, weather conditions and timing of application play a role. We also take water supply and the way the product reaches the root zone into account in the assessment. The method of application (spraying, spreading or via irrigation) determines product form and pack size.

  • Glass greenhouses in a modern glasshouse horticulture area

    Greenhouses and glasshouse horticulture

In greenhouses, growing climate, water supply and crop schedule are often tightly managed. Within the same greenhouse environment, crops may be grown in soil, on substrate or hydroponically. Recirculated water calls for compatible products and stable dosing.

Growing system and application

  • Soil and root zone

In soil-based cultivation we look at the growing medium, root environment, crop stage and timing of application. The preferred product form (granules, powder or liquid) follows from that.

  • Substrate and hydroponics

Coir, rockwool and nutrient solutions each have their own demands on dosing and water quality.

  • Irrigation and dosing systems

Irrigation is an application route, not a growing category. Filters, pipework and dosing are assessed per project. Fine filters and water quality set requirements for particle size and form.

Our role

Where Microbac helps

A microbial product has to fit the growing systems and applications of your market. That is why we work with you, from first selection to product form.

  1. Selection per growing environment

We assess which microorganisms suit open-field, greenhouse or substrate cultivation for quality and suitability, using our microbiological expertise and strain bank. Our R&D team explains the choices.

  2. Product form per application route

Liquid or dry, for soil, substrate or irrigation: the form matches how your customers apply the product. This can be an existing product or a development of your own.

  3. Quality and CFU control

Quality and concentration are checked, so you know what the product specifications are based on.

  4. Compatibility with the growing system

Potting soil, coir, rockwool, nutrient solutions and irrigation filters each set their own requirements. We align this technically with you.

  5. Moment of use and crop stage

The moment of application in the crop determines dosing and packaging. We help you plan the practical execution.

Approach

From growing requirements to product

A growing project begins with your growing environment, the applications and what your product must achieve.

  1. Discuss market, applications and goals

We discuss which market segments, growing environments and applications your product line needs to serve, and what you want to achieve with it.

  2. Map the technical conditions

Growing system, water quality, method of application and any combinations with other products.

  3. Select organisms and formulation

With that information we select the microorganisms and develop the formulation.

  4. Review a prototype or first batch

We review a prototype or first batch for your crop segment together with you.

  5. Quality control and delivery

After quality and CFU (colony-forming units) checks, delivery follows as agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Briefly answered

Which agricultural and horticultural applications does Microbac develop microbial products for?

Microbac develops microbial products, including microbial biostimulants and soil improvers, for professional applications in open-field crops, greenhouses and glasshouse horticulture, substrate cultivation, hydroponics and irrigation or dosing systems. The details depend on crop, growing system and market. Every project starts with a conversation about your application.

What information is needed to assess an agricultural application?

Useful details are crop and growing method, the growing system (open field, greenhouse, substrate or hydroponics), water quality, the desired method of application and the moment of use. The target market and any wishes for packaging or product form also matter. If information is missing, we help you determine it.

Can microbial products be applied through an irrigation system?

Application through an irrigation system is a route we can explore with you. Compatibility with water quality, filters, pipework, dosing and other inputs is assessed per project. We discuss this before development begins.
